Phytoplankton dynamics and bloom events in oligotrophic Mediterranean lagoons: seasonal patterns but hazardous trends

نویسندگان

چکیده

Detailed seasonal analyses of phytoplankton assemblages’ composition were performed on long-term datasets (20 years) two oligotrophic Mediterranean lagoons (Diana and Urbino), in order to test if community bloom events patterns rely a basis. Our results highlight similar between the lagoons, but different terms abundances, timing, magnitude occurrence Taxonomic Units, occurrence. Dominant diatoms group showed repartition, with highest contribution Skeletonema sp. during winter spring, some other groups emerging warmer seasons (e.g. Chaetoceros spp.), or not showing marked seasonality Pseudo-nitzschia spp.). Dinoflagellates’ abundances higher autumn, besides exhibiting punctual proliferations over year. Salinity was strongest environmental parameter controlling Diana lagoon community, while Urbino mostly controlled by turbidity. A worrying evolution toxic diatom spp., linked salinity temperature changes, detected both lagoons. We further demonstrated changes are ongoing these despite their contrasting human pressure contexts, indicating that serious impacts dynamics blooms triggering shall be foreseen within current forecasted climate change scenarios.

A Phytoplankton Bloom Model with Seasonal Nutrient Input

A model for nutrient-phytoplankton dynamics is constructed and analyzed. A theoretical analysis shows that changes in the nutrient input can significantly change the qualitative behavior of the phytoplankton dynamics. In particular, the behavior can change from asymptotically stable to periodic. Numerical solutions of the model are carried out for seasonal nutrient inputs of a range of differen...

Phytoplankton-Associated Bacterial Community Composition and Succession during Toxic Diatom Bloom and Non-Bloom Events

Pseudo-nitzschia blooms often occur in coastal and open ocean environments, sometimes leading to the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid that can cause severe negative impacts to higher trophic levels. Increasing evidence suggests a close relationship between phytoplankton bloom and bacterial assemblages, however, the microbial composition and succession during a bloom process is unknown. ...

Phytoplankton seasonal dynamics in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon: emphasis on the picoeukaryote community

The dynamics of the phytoplankton community were investigated in a marine coastal lagoon (Thau, NW Mediterranean) from February 1999 to January 2000. Dilution experiments, chlorophyll a (Chl a) size-fractionation and primary production measurements were conducted monthly. Maximum growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were estimated from Chl a biomass fractions to separate picofrom nanoand m...

Water quality evaluation in Mediterranean lagoons using the Multimetric Phytoplankton Index (MPI): Study cases from Sardinia

1 Water quality in four Sardinian lagoons (western Mediterranean Sea) was assessed using the Multimetric Phytoplankton Index (MPI), which is consistent with the EU Water Framework Directive. The index was developed using data on phytoplankton abundances, species structure and chlorophyll a concentrations in Venice Lagoon, Italy. 2 The aim of this study was to test the MPI on a larger geographic...

Metagenomes of Mediterranean Coastal Lagoons

Coastal lagoons, both hypersaline and freshwater, are common, but still understudied ecosystems. We describe, for the first time, using high throughput sequencing, the extant microbiota of two large and representative Mediterranean coastal lagoons, the hypersaline Mar Menor, and the freshwater Albufera de Valencia, both located on the south eastern coast of Spain. We show there are considerable...
